Yesterday my wife was at the optometrist for an eye exam, new glasses and new contacts. I have VSP insurance and my policy covers the cost of frames/lenses for both of us (minus upgrades). It covers either glasses OR contacts for both of us, but has discounts for both.
The short of it, I paid $607 for my wife for glasses and contacts, WITH my insurance discount. At the register, the woman said 'oops, I made a mistake, you need edge thinning' (she has thick lenses), and proceeded to tack on a $177 charge with my credit card in her hand! (the doctor was right behind her). Here's the summary out of pocket:
- $342 for 2 boxes of preference contacts, (incl. $42 for a fitting that he didn't do - 'standard charge'). Important to note that these exact lenses cost $280 if I just ordered them off 1-800-contacts with no insurance discount.
- $265 for frames, lenses and upgrades: $177 for edge thinning, $51 for anti-glare coating, $35 exam, $10 copay
Am I crazy or does that seem wrong?
